(CMDI) spearheaded by the Degree Educational Partnership (DEP) Unit, celebrated the <em><i>Palarong Lahi <\/i><\/em>2017 with the theme, <em><i>\u201cLarong Lahi: Bahagi ng Kasaysayan, Masayang Balikan\u201d <\/i><\/em>on January 28, 2017 at the CMDI Main Campus, Brgy. Tranca, Bay, Laguna.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3439\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"picture3\" width=\"504\" height=\"318\" data-id=\"3439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The said activity showcased and revived various Filipino traditional games such as dama, bunong braso, sipa, sungka, piko, kadang-kadang, patintero, and sack race, which were simultaneously participated in by seven blocks from senior high school and college departments.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, youth are captivated with different foreign-influenced games and with the advent of technology, they are drawn to the virtual space, seemingly forgetting to play some \u201cphysical\u201d outdoor games. \u201cThere\u2019s a need to integrate these traditional sports especially to students\u2019 academic life for it is remarkably part of the Philippine history,\u201d said Mr. Luisito Lapitan, faculty member. The institution, wants to bring back the old way of human learning and interaction with the nature by conducting this activity every year.<\/p>\n<p>The program kicked off with the parade of students, staff, and faculty from Brgy. Tranca covered court to the main campus. The opening activities were highlighted by the oath of sportsmanship and torch lighting. The flame set the mood of the activity where the participants loudly and proudly cheered for their teams.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p><strong><b>The Parade <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senior High School and college students are all smiles and full of energy as the parade started at 6 o\u2019clock in the morning from Brgy. Tranca, Bay, Laguna covered court to CARD-MRI Development Institute, Inc. (CMDI) main campus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote><p><strong><b>Lighting of the torch <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Warren Evangelista of Block 3 senior high school department, one of the representatives, initiated the lighting of the torch which marked the opening of the <em><i>Palarong Lahi<\/i><\/em>\u00a02017.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Edzel Ramos, CMDI Institute Director and Dean, in his opening remarks, advised the participants to aim for a friendly competition and to uphold the principles of sportsmanship. \u201cWhether you win or lose, the most important thing is to give your best for the team and enjoy the day,\u201d he emphasized. Indeed, everybody was energetic, enthusiastic, and competitive to reach their goal to win.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3456\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture17-1024x642.png\" alt=\"picture17\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\" data-id=\"3456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><b>Dama<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dama is a famous board game in the Philippines played on a wooden board with 10 squares and 14 end points. Block 1 and Block 7 ladies, both from college department come face to face in this game of strategy<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3458\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture16-1024x598.png\" alt=\"picture16\" width=\"540\" height=\"315\" data-id=\"3458\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Bunong Braso <\/b><br \/>\nWomen power: Mary Jane Negrite of Block 1 senior high school and Rheania Polota of Block 3 college<br \/>\nbusted the myth that women\u2019s arms are fragile.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture18.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3460\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture18-766x1024.png\" alt=\"picture18\" width=\"540\" height=\"722\" data-id=\"3460\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><b>Sipa<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Sipa or \u201ckick\u201d is the Philippines\u2019 traditional native sport before the Spanish era. Eduard Bantangoso of Block 1 college displayed his \u201csipa\u201d skills.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture19.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3462\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture19-1024x625.png\" alt=\"picture19\" width=\"540\" height=\"330\" data-id=\"3462\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><b>Sungka<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a game played on a solid wooden block (2 rows, 7 circular holes and 2 heads). Blocks 3 and 2 of senior high school competed against each other.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3464\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture20-1024x680.png\" alt=\"picture20\" width=\"540\" height=\"359\" data-id=\"3464\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Piko <\/b><br \/>\n<i>Piko <\/i>is hopping onto the squares to finish the diagram and establish many \u201chouses\u201d. Jessica Catina and John Drin Malabanan represented Block 1 senior high school for this game of hopping and jumping.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3465\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture21-1024x631.png\" alt=\"picture21\" width=\"540\" height=\"333\" data-id=\"3465\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Kadang-kadang <\/b><br \/>\nBlocks 1 and 4 of college department raced and walked synchronously to reach the goal line.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3466\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture22-1024x680.png\" alt=\"picture22\" width=\"540\" height=\"359\" data-id=\"3466\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Patintero <\/b><br \/>\nCollege Blocks 4 and 1 guarded each other\u2019s territories in this physically-intensive game.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3467\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture23-1024x680.png\" alt=\"picture23\" width=\"540\" height=\"359\" data-id=\"3467\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Sack Race <\/b><br \/>\nNestor Macaraeg of Block 1 college rushed and jumped high to reach the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture24.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3468\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Picture24.png\" alt=\"picture24\" width=\"607\" height=\"416\" data-id=\"3468\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>The Champion <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Block 4 of the college department is the overall champion of <em><i>Palarong Lahi<\/i><\/em>\u00a02017.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Block 4 of the college department emerged as this year\u2019s overall champion. Meanwhile, Blocks 3 and 7, also of the college department, were the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0and 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0runners up, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>According to Robielyn Villamor, college student, <em><i>Palarong Lahi<\/i><\/em>\u00a0should be extended from one to three days to include plenty of indoor and outdoor games enabling them to develop their cognitive and physical skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillenials are now aware that old games played before by their folks are more entertaining and physically challenging not like the online games which are easy to manipulate and can be cheated sometimes,\u201d expressed Ms. Vilma Romanillos, faculty member.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it was a successful event and students are looking forward to witness and experience next year\u2019s <em><i>Palarong Lahi.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><i>News feature article <\/i><\/em><em><i>by: Dianne B.
