CMDI students are “MATHinik”

The CARD-MRI Development Institute, Inc. (CMDI) through the Degree Educational Partnership (DEP), conducted the second “MATHinik” with the theme, “Unraveling the Beauty and Challenge of Mathematics” at its main campus in Brgy. Tranca, Bay, Laguna on March 25, 2017.

The one-day event aimed to: promote academic excellence among Senior High School (SHS) students and BS Entrepreneurship (BSE) college students through competitive and friendly activities such as poem-writing or “MATHula”, Quiz Bee, and “Amazing MATHrace”; enhance students’ knowledge in Mathematics; boost participants’ camaraderie; allow students to show their skills, talent, and wit; and improve their analytical and problem solving abilities.

Students showed that they are not only good in numbers but also in words, and this was demonstrated in the “MATHula”, where John Roice Juego, SHS student, composed the winning piece. Meanwhile, John Drin Malabanan, also a SHS student and college student Nickel Nepomuceno exhibited their rhyming and striking style of writing to give Mathematics a new meaning, where they bagged the second and third place, respectively.

The students confidently showed and proved their mastery in Algebra, Business Mathematics, and Statistics in the inter-block MATHinik Quiz Bee.  Three students excelled in this competition, namely: Shaira Ilagan, first place; Rein Romari Malabana, second place; and Marinela Hernandez, third place.

On the other hand, SHS students May Anne Padilla is the champion in the Business Mathematics category, followed by Joshua Ellera at second place, and Jonalyn Gutierrez, college student, is at third place. In addition, SHS students, Harlene Joy Reyes, Jewella Marie Luistro, and Trisha Joy Ancajas stood out in the Statistics category.

An enrichment workshop on Vedic Mathematics was also conducted which presented ways to simplify equations and introduced shortcut techniques in computing numbers. The Amazing MATHrace culminated the day’s events where six groups finished the five stations and Block 3 SHS emerged as the winner.

“Students were able to recognize the vivid and real applications of Mathematics in their daily lives through the activities we’ve conducted and I think that’s the beauty of Mathematics,” according to Engr. Micky Kalaw, Mathematics Instructor and overall event coordinator.

All winners were awarded with medals and certificates at the end of the program.
